In 1931, Jozef "Jefke" Thomas, farmer's son, started a garage for Hanomag and later started selling Ford tractors. Early '60s his son, Joris "Georges" Thomas, expanded the business by building excavators for tractors. A few years later, in 1967, Georges founded Thomas Kranen, specialising in hydraulic agricultural cranes.
In 1982the production of excavators was stopped and the focus shifted completely to the construction of aerial work platforms. In 1986, sons Eric and Joris took over the company and it grew into a global player in the aerial work platform industry.
In 2008, Michiel Thomas, Eric's son, joined as the fourth generation. In 2019, Thomas Rental was founded to offer rental service of Thomas aerial work platforms on tractors exclusively in Europe. In 2020, Thomas Kranen became the exclusive importer of Oil&Steel and Palazzani Industrie. In 2021, the name changed to Thomas Hoogwerkers, under the leadership of Eric and Michiel.
In 2023, Thomas Maetens joined as a co-partner and the construction of a new business site was started. In 2024, the company moved to the new workshop, where they are working on developing a new generation of aerial work platforms.
